The impact of technology on youths, women and persons living with disabilities

In our daily lives, no one can escape the absolute necessity of technology. We cannot easily do anything without it. We use technology in our homes, in schools, in industries and even in hospitals.

So, what is technology?

Technology refers to techniques, systems, and equipment that use scientific awareness for practical purposes.

This article will explore the positive impact of technology on young people, women and persons with disabilities.

 Youth

Young people around the world are enthusiastically embracing technology and the power of technology has been shown to be a powerful force on the path to achieving the sustainable development goal.

Walter Akolo is a Kenyan freelance writer, technology entrepreneur, and internet marketer. Through his website (freelance Kenya), he has mentored over 3,000 Kenyans who have now embraced digital work. The internet has not only provided job opportunities for him, but many other youths pay bills, school fees and even go on vacation through freelancing.

The ability to research has been made easier through technology. Many youths are now able to do research on almost every topic through Google. Students are also able to save time as they can get access to so many materials online. Before the introduction of the internet, doing research was troublesome and time-consuming. Students had to go to the library to do research. Sometimes the library did not have the books they needed. They would then order these books through the library. This could take some time. This problem has been solved through technology. They can therefore save a lot of time and get as many reference books as they want online.

Technology smoothens communication. Youths who live in different regions can communicate and share ideas. They can also promote their businesses and get clients through online communication services.

Women

Women are increasingly turning to technology to reduce sexual violence, female genital mutilation and gender inequality.

In Kenya, for example, one in five women have been subjected to FGM. Various campaigns have been run through social media platforms about the physical, psychological, and social consequences of FGM. Amina, who is a chief campaigner against Female Genital Mutilation, says that FGM is rooted in gender inequality and the majority of those who promote it are older men. Through various Facebook groups, she has motivated Kenyans to stop this retrogressive culture.

Women in business share their success stories on the internet and this has been a great encouragement to others, especially those who are less privileged.

People living with disabilities

In terms of job opportunities, people with disabilities have always been disadvantaged. Physical disabilities often prevent them from going to work. Through technology, various reliable software tools have been developed that help in communication and sharing of information safely and reliably on the internet. Those with physical disabilities can comfortably work from home, hence they now have fewer obstacles to pursuing a productive career.

Through technology, voice control programs have been developed. This is very effective for individuals who may not have the function in their hands to type on keyboards.

People with no vision can also use Braille and screen reading software to browse the internet, send or receive emails.

Conclusion

Technology is rapidly evolving to improve productivity and well-being for all. There are many other ways in which technology has changed the way we live. These are just some of the indispensable ways technology is influencing and remodeling the youths, women, and people living with disabilities.
